Photos from Sydney, Day 2

As promised, here are a few photos to give you a sense of what we've been up to. These are all from yesterday, so they're a bit late --- unless you consider that my yesterday (in Australia) is actually your today (in the States), so maybe they're actually right on time. Or something. Damn international date line!

Anyway. Photos.

This is the entrance to Hyde Park, bearing absolutely no resemblance to the one in London, but beautiful nonetheless. We walk through this way going from our hotel down to Circular Quay.

An Australian white ibis:

These are absolutely everywhere, drinking out of fountains (as demonstrated), eating scraps, perching in the palm trees, and generally making urban nuisances out of themselves.

A sign at the entrance to the Royal Botanic Gardens, demonstrating conclusively that we are NOT in London:

"Please walk on the grass." I love it!

A tree-ful of flying foxes:

They make a terrific racket, too. We took some video on our camera but it's too poor quality to post, so you'll just have to take my word for it. Or resort to YouTube.

A sulphur-crested cockatoo poses for a photo:

Pigeons included for scale.

Just to prove that we're actually in Sydney, here's the obligatory Opera House picture, with the Harbour Bridge in the background, as seen from the Botanic Gardens:

I think this is a little pied cormorant, drying its wings on the rocks at Manly Beach, but I didn't take my bird book with me, so I'm not sure of the identification. Anyway, it's here for Dad, who has a sweet but somewhat puzzling fondness for ocean birds:

Finally, Manly Beach on the ocean side. This is after the sun came out yesterday (obviously):
